The ICON A5 is a sexy new ultra-light amphibious sport aircraft that requires only a sport airplane license instead of the full private pilot license to fly. This is due to the shorter range of only 435 miles and top speed of 130 miles an hour. Faster aircraft with longer range require a private pilot license in order to fly. The ICON A5 is a two person carbon fiber shell, push style personal aircraft with fold-able wings for storage and transportation purposes. Produced since 2016, the A5 is like having a supercar. It's cockpit has been designed with ease of use in mind for the first time flyer, to get people into the sport of flying for pleasure not just to get from point A to point B. What is more exhilarating then leaving the ground behind and traversing the world? Freedom from the normal borders and boundaries!
A sport license allows you to fly in daylight hours only when visibility is 3 miles or greater. You can carry a passenger, fly in class E and G airspace, and the aircraft flown must meet the definition of light-sport aircraft (LSA). You cannot fly for compensation or hire with this license, nor can you tow any object. You are limited to below 10,000 feet mean sea level (MSL), or 2,000 ft above ground level (AGL). As well as flying aircraft with a top speed greater than 100 miles per hour. The top speed limitation can be overcome with additional endorsements. Which is necessary for the ICON A5 since it tops out at 109 miles per hour. It's about the journey not the destination! The additional endorsements can also allow you to operate in class B, C and D airspace, as well as fly aircraft in different categories and classes.

The ICON A5 is indeed at supercar territory with an asking price of $389,000 to get your wings, but it is a plane, and an amphibious plane at that. Requiring no pontoons to land on water. It is possible to trailer the ICON A5 to a boat launching dock, roll the A5 off the trailer, then drive it down the ramp into the water. From there, once you get into deep enough water you can pull the landing gear up into the hull of the airplane and use the bilge pump to pump the water out. The A5 is designed to be driven across the water for fun. This is made possible by what they call seawings. These are platforms extending off the side of the hull airplane that provide stability on water.
You can take off from the lake you have just launched into if you can get 840 feet of runway space. The Airplane can be landed in the water if you have 700 ft at your disposal. The A5 uses a Rotax 912 engine capable of 100 hp positioned by the cockpit, allowing for clear views, and even the ability to open the side windows and let air into the place to give you a more exhilarating and engaging experience. The engine utilizes 91 octane auto fuel or 100LL aviation fuel, so if you are trailering the plane along and stop to fuel up your car, you can also fuel up your plane while you're at it. The maximum takeoff weight is 1,510 lbs with a useful load of 430 to 550 lbs while the maximum baggage carry allowed is 60 lbs.

When taking off from a regular runway, the A5 needs 640 feet and landing distance is 590 feet. How amazing is that though? To be able to take off from an airport and find a lake, land, go for a swim, takeoff again, and return to the airport to go about your day? What a life! The A5 is pushed by three propellers attached to the Rotax 912 engine, tucked within the wingspan of 34.8 feet. The plane has a height of 8.1 feet and is 23 feet long. The cockpit is a tight fit at 46 inches total, the seats fit like a glove. It's like being in a can-am offroad buggy. The A5 has a stall speed of 45 mph allowing you to essentially stop and smell the roses, taking in the scenery as you fly by. The cruise speed is 95 mph. The flight controls of the A5 were inspired by military aircraft so it uses a center stick position to control the ailerons and elevator. It comes with an Angle of Attack Indicator which tells the pilot how close the wing is to stalling. The instrument cluster was designed to mimic car designs for ease of interpretation and transition for those who are new to flying from driving a car to entering the world of flying a plane.

The A5 comes with an integrated Garmin Aera 796 GPS unit that allows you to remove it and take it with you while you plan your next route so you're not just stuck to the cockpit whenever you need to make a flight plan. The 796 is a touchscreen operated device that has cool new features like 3D terrain view that allows you to see what's coming on the gps as you would expect to see it in the real world instead simply a top down interpretation. This system has an ADS-B out and has the ability to inform you of other aircraft within your proximity and the altitude level in relation to you, notifying of possible dangers.

The A5 comes with other cool safety features such as a Spin-Resistant airframe to allow you to keep control. It comes with a parachute system in case of engine failure for some reason, giving you peace of mind that you have a backup system to not only keep you safe but protect your investment. There are additional accessories that can be purchased for the aircraft as well such as the Amphib Trailer which is what is used to trailer the ICON for where you want to take it. At $45,000 it is a really steep price to pay but it does have such features as a Wireless winch control as well as an electro-hydraulic lift system that allows the aircraft to be loaded and unloaded from the water with the landing gear retracted. The independent bunk system allows the aircraft to be rolled onto the trailer with landing gear extended for those on ground excursions. The trailer is 30.17 feet in length, but can be shortened to 28.5 feet if needed. It's 8.5 feet wide by 4.33 feet in height.

For those who keep their plane at the marina or have a lake house, there is an option to buy a large inflatable dock. Once again with another steep asking price of $23,000. This dock measures 243 inches by 228 inches by 8 inches. This dock consists of three pieces that provide access to the cockpit as well as the wings and fuselage. Provided is two inflation pumps, storage bag, 2 venturi guns, pressure gage, repair kit, and two 10 meter ropes as well four 15 meter ropes. A smaller inflatable dock (not pictured) is also offered at a price of $8,500 which again is really steep. This dock is designed to focus on the cockpit entrance and getting to the seawings of the airplane. Otherwise it has all the same accessories except the length of the ropes is different with two at 5 meters and two at 10 meters. Dimensions are 114 inches by 120 inches by 8 inches.

If you have the means, and you just have to one up your friends, what could be better than doing it with an ICON A5? Seriously is there a cooler plane out there to have fun with?
